It doesn’t matter what country, city or neighbourhood we were born in. It doesn’t matter what colour our skin is. It doesn’t matter what our job is or what school we’ve been to, who we call family or who we’ve chosen to love. The more we are different, the more we’ll fight to be equal.
Equal.
The more we are different,
the more we’ll fight to be equal.
“Equal is the word I love the most.” Sophie has been thinking about tattooing it on her body. Meanwhile, she’s written it in white paint on the left sleeve of our denim jacket, which is now ready to travel across Italy and bring its universal message of equality and inclusion.
Among the loud chatter, Sophie talks with her friends about her dream career in fashion or about that time when she took a plane to go and meet her father in Senegal after 13 years. “Seeing him after so long was such an emotional experience,” she admits. “I went to reclaim a part of me.”
One woman. Two souls.
Lots of hair in many different styles.
Sophie has a big portrait of herself hanging in her living room. This has got nothing to do with vanity (or so she says). It’s a reminder of her two souls - one Italian, one Senegalese. This funny, friendly lady’s distinguishing feature is her big, ever-changing hair - one day it’s an afro, the next it’s in braids or a head wrap. Sophie styles it according to her mood, convinced that change is the driving force of the world.
Sophie grew up in Turin with her maternal grandparents, who she adores and are the undisputed stars of her Stories. In the evening she hangs out at Qui, a bar she used to work at and that she considers her “secret garden”.
